Posted on Mon, 17 Nov 2014
Question: I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago and it is still a little swollen and on Saturday I got cramps behind my upper calf out of nowhere and now it is thursday and I still have cramp like pain it goes away when I lay down and elevate my foot but when I stand up I get the pain I don't put pressure on it. Prior to having the pain I was trying to walk on my ankle only a couple steps and drove around for 1hr using my sprained ankle....Iv been googling and seen information that pain in calf could be a DVT from sprain ankle I don't have any swelling and I cant tell if its warm because my leg is elevated on a pillow so my leg is usually warm and it does hurt when i push on the upper left part of my calf muscle....Is it normal to be experiencing cramp like filling in calf from sprain? I am A 22 year old male

Brief Answer:
You may send the picture of calf if possible

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks to posting
It is uncommon to have cramp following sprain. This may have happened because of walk for 1 hour.To help you better please tell me -
1.Is there any bluish /reddish discoloration at calf?
2.Is the calf tense as compare to non injured site?
Looking forward to your reply.
Take care

Brief Answer:
It is not DVT

Detailed Answer:
Hello
It's good to see you.
I have gone through your reply and it does not looks to be DVT. It could be muscle fatigue or muscle spasm.Hence, my suggestion would be -
1.Hot water fomentation and gentle stretching will help.
2.Ibuprofen along with muscle relaxant drug baclofen helps.
Hope this helps.
Take care
