Question: I have been having pain on my left shoulder with tingling and numbness on my left hand. I have seen a Physical Therapist who said CERVICAL STENOSIS. Can you please explain in layman's language what it is?

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Spinal cord compression on the neck area.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Cervical stenosis is simply a spine compression on the neck area. Such compression is usually caused by spine disc herniation. Please try to imagine a tube with something inside. Now when you push one of the tube wall there will be less room inside the tube and the thing inside will be compressed.

Hand tingling and numbness can be caused by cervical stenosis indeed. However similar symptoms can appear due to carpal tunnel syndrome. This issue is caused by a compression of median nerve in the wrist area.
First 3 fingers are mostly affected so the tingling and numbness is present in them only. The pain usually gets stronger in the night.

For cervical stenosis you should have spine MRI done. For carpal tunnel syndrome, wrist ultrasound and EMG should be done.
Both conditions can be treated with surgery.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

The 3 visits with the Physical Therapist (one hour sessions) seem to help. I go twice a week and they had scheduled me for 4 weeks. Beyond this time, will I still get the on-and-off pain once my PT is done? I have scoliosis and I suspect this has contributed to the pain. I do not want surgery to relieve the pain. Is this condition affected by diet? If so, what food should I eat and what should I avoid? Will the pain remain in my left shoulder/neck? Will the right shoulder/neck also be affected?

Brief Answer:
PT can be very helpful

Detailed Answer:
Surgery is usually the last step. Physical therapy,if helps, is a good choice so the surgery wont be ever necessary. Hard to tell how your pain will be acting after PT. It can disappear for a long time or come back really quick. It all depends how advanced are spine changes.
Diet has nothing to do with this issue. But physical activity does. Pool swimming is what can help a lot.
Usually pain is on one side only. It should go away from shoulder after PT.
