Brief Answer:
Antibiotics can be taken to prevent super infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,

Sore throat, mild fever, cough with mucus with swollen glands are symptoms of upper respiratory infection.

Majority of cases of throat pain are due to viral infection, but in some cases it is related to bacterial infection (like streptococcal pharyngitis) but it is slightly difficult to say clinically (whether it is viral or bacterial) and without appropriate blood investigations.

If I would have your treating doctor,I would like to differentiate the cause through routine blood counts (CBS,ESR) and throat examination with pharyngoscopy to rule out non infective causes.

So,you can go for some routine blood works if not done earlier.

You may take antibiotics from (which quinolones (levofloxacin) would be preferred) to prevent super infection even if the cause is viral.

However, antibiotics are not usually required in case of viral infection but if you would take it then there will be no issue, rather it would certainly help you to resolve from this throat symptoms quickly.

Also, take analgesics with anti-inflammatory combination (paracetamol + ibuprofen) drugs available over the counter.

Nebulization with steam inhalation 2 to 3 times daily and warm salt water gargles which will also be helpful for symptomatic relief.

Take multivitamins like vitamin B complex with folic acid daily once.

For antibiotics, you will need a prescription from some local doctor or GP and rest of other medicines will be available over the counter.

Hope this will help you, feel free to ask if you have more questions.

Thanks and Regards,

Thank you!!

I have script from doc for amoxicillin - wasn't sure if i should start it?

Strep test was negative
Lungs were clear yesterday

Using Manuka honey for throat and it seems to be helping a little bit now - also it helps cough for an hour or two at a time. Just got some Xlear for nose, good choice? I need to get moisture in there. Using humidifier in room.

What about blood that i blow out of nose? Does it mean infection?

Brief Answer:
You can take amoxicillin as prescribed your doctor.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the quick reply.

Yes,you can take amoxicillin as per prescription from your doctor and it is good that streptococcal tests is negative which is indicative of viral infection.

Bleeding from nose could be due from small capillaries sometimes seen in viral infection but you need not to bother about it as it will also subside with treatment viral infection. You can use XLEAR nasal spray for nose and humidifier in room.

Also there is no issue in using manuka honey if you feel improvement in cough.

Generally, it may take 4 to 5 days to resolve upper respiratory infection symptoms with antibiotic and other symptomatic medications.

Regards,
