Suggest Treatment For Sore Throat, Fever And Cough

default
Posted on Tue, 9 May 2017
Question: I had a very bad sore throat (8.5 on a scale of 10). Could not swallow anything , very painful. Sore throat was the main issue. Did not have any major sneezing or fever or cough or runny nose etc..
Went to GP. He prescribed be Azithromicin 500mg, 3 day course. Started feeling better 24 hours after the first dose. Felt better at the end of Day 3

1 week later, came down again with the Sore throat. Same as before, except that the pain was less than last time (6 on a pain scale of 10). Went back to the doctor, he gave me Ciphalexin 500mg, 3 times a day for 10 days. Felt good after the 2'nd day and progress continued. took the full 10 day course. Visited ENT after 5 days of course, and he said it was all clear. He did not see anything.

Finished that course last Monday. From Wednesday onwards, I have a sore throat again, but also have mild to medium nasal congestion and feeling chill, but really no fever or sneezing or runny nose Have not taken any antibiotic this time. Sore throat comes and goes now, like it is bad in the morning. Maybe I have post nasal drip

Dont think it is so common to get recurring infections so frequently.. worried I may have something else.. Could this be allergy? Could this be viral? But then why did taking an antibiotic make me feel better?

Please help

Brief Answer:
Possibility of viral infection with superadded bacterial infection is more.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Recurrent sore throat is most likely due to viral infection and poor oral hygiene.
Viral infection makes local immunity down. So superadded bacterial infection is common. And hence you were improving with antibiotics.
So you are need to maintain good oral hygiene by
1. Do chlorhexidine mouth gargles 5-6 times a day.
2. Also do warm water gargles 5-6 times a day.
3. Avoid oily and spicy food. Avoid hard to chew food.
4. Drink plenty of fluids orally and keep yourself hydrated.
Do all these for 1 week and if you still have sore throat then we need to rule out allergy as a cause.
Don't worry, you will be alright.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.
