Suggest Treatment For Sore Throat And Sinus Infection

default
Posted on Wed, 15 Apr 2015
Question: Hi. I have had a sore throat issue for about a week. A little over 2 weeks ago I had a sinus infection that appeared to clear up with antibiotics. That medication I finished about a week ago.
My throat is extremely sore, feels swollen...seemingly getting worse as the evening arrives and overnight. I feel some pain in my ears also.
Wondering what this might be...could it be related to the sinus infection I had? Probably time to see the doctor again...

Brief Answer:
It could be because of new infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

If sinusitis was cured completely with course of antibiotics then this sore throat could be because of a new infection unrelated to sinusitis.

Majority of cases throat pain are due to viral infection, but in some cases it is related to bacterial infection (streptococcal pharyngitis) or reflux esophagitis (person who is having acid reflux problem). We differentiate the cause through routine blood counts with throat examination, pharyngoscopy to rule out non infective causes. Therefore it is advisable to see the doctor. Preferably you must see ENT specialist for complete medical history including history of sensitivity to antibiotics and thoroughly clinical examination.

You might require antibiotics (to prevent superinfection if cause is viral) with analgesics, antiinflammatories, decongestants and nebulization with steam inhalation.

In the meanwhile you can start warm salt water gargles. It helps.
