Suggest Treatment For Sore Throat And Redness On The Upper Palate

default
Posted on Thu, 11 Aug 2016
Question: On July 15th I had a sore throat and visited my doctor. Was prescribed penicillin VK 300mg to be taken for 10 days. I did not see any improvement and saw my family doctor yesterday who said it was just a viral inflammation (left side throat and tonsil area) and not strep or bacterial. It was suggested that I still finish with the penicillin. I also visited an ER last night and they told me it was again just inflammation. Two days ago as I was eating i noticed a little red bump and redness on my left side of my upper palate. In the picture it would be reversed and to the right. You can sort of see the redness which is the size of the end of a pinky finger.I did happen to see my dentist for a routine visit and asked about it. He examined it with dental tool and said it was just inflammation and tested it for oral cancer. Negative. I should add that I do have sinusitis and do use Avamys for each nostril is twice daily. Based on what you can see in the picture is there any cause for alarm or am I worrying too much? Is there anything I can do for it? Its not very painful however feels irritated when I drink and eat. How long will this take to heal as I'm feeling frustrated. Also I do note that the last 2 nights after taking my penicillin and Avamys my ears feels red and warm

Brief Answer:
There is no cause for worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. A viral infection lasting more than 10 days will have a secondary bacterial infection or a mixed infection.

2. The redness in the image is common and s sign of infection that is still active. The warm felling also signifies the same.

3. A throat swab for culture and a change of antibiotic will help.

4. Avamys is a steroid based nasal spray and hence should be temporarily discontinued during an active infection.

5. Supportive medication such as anti inflammatory, anti allergic medication, medicated gargles and steam inhalation will ease the symptoms.

6. The question of cancer does not arise.

7. With a change of medication, this should settle down soon.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

I just saw my doctor and he told me that I no longer need to use the penicillin after examining the same areas I showed you in the pictures. . Do you agree with this? Should I be asking for another antibiotic such as Amoxicillin? Instead he is prescribing an antibacterial mouth rinse to be used 3X a day and asked to check back in on Friday morning. I did have a swab taken this past Sunday and should know the result by then as well.

Brief Answer:
Avoid s break in the medication till the swab report is available.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. Ideally you should be started with a combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid.

2. Avoid a break in the medication till the swab report is available.

3. Your doctors judgement on direct examination may prevail, but it is better to avoid a flare up of the infection again. I usually recommend a haemogram (complete blood count) at this stage to assess the infection.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. Yes, that is fine.

2. The combination of amoxicillin with clavulanic acid will be better than amoxicillin alone.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.
