Suggest Treatment For Sore Bruising And Swelling In Lower Skin After Injury

default
Posted on Mon, 22 Jun 2015
Question: 7 days ago i fell and hit my lower shin above my ankle. There was no bruising and the swelling and pain only begun 5 hours later- which was quite significant. In the next few days bruising appeared in the area and it remained sore to touch. Since then the pain settled down and the swelling reduced however yesterday dark bruising and bright red spots (similar to new bruises) has appeared around my ankle on the top/side of my foot. It is beginning to also be painful to stand on and flex my ankle. It appears to be worse than when I first hurt it! Is this common or cause for concern? Unsure if I should continue to rest it or if it is more serious.

Brief Answer:
I will advise x ray and MRI ankle for soft tissue involvement.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us,

I have studied your case with diligence.

If bruising and swelling persist then there is possibility of internal injury to ligament or unicortical bone fracture. Further as per your history and injury pattern there can be tear in ankle ligament leading to pain and swelling. And instability may increase due to laxity of ligament.

In this context we need to exercise caution and therefore it is advisable to obtain x ray and MRI ankle of the involved area.

Without X-rays / scan it would be very difficult to assess the nature of injury and to know about the seriousness of scan. If you are unable to get an early appointment with an orthopedic, suggest to visit the ER.

Until then you can continue use supportive splint or brace.

Hope this answers your query. If you have additional questions or follow up queries then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your queries.

Wishing you good health.

Take care.
