Suggest Treatment For Small Pea Sized Lump On The Side Of The Shin

default
Posted on Mon, 10 Aug 2015
Question: Hi,

I noticed a couple of days ago a small half pea sized bump/lump on my left leg on the side of my shin 2/3 of the way down from my shin. it is only really painful when I touch it and is not painful to walk or anything. I can't remember knocking my shin, but may well have done and have also ran a bit and have been active. I saw a nurse today who said it is likely a soft tissue injury.

I also noticed when I try and feel the bump when I stand on the floor it is seems to almost go away or is hard to feel, but if I elevate my leg you can feel it, so thinking it may be muscle or a tendon thing?

Any ideas on what this might be?

Thx

Brief Answer:
Can be due to shin splint.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
According to your description, the small pea sized bump that you have might be due to shin splints.

Shin splints usually result from overuse. Repeated movements of the foot can cause damage where the tibialis muscles attach to the tibia. Soon the edge of the muscles may begin to pull away from the bone. The injured muscle and the bone covering (the periosteum) become inflamed. This can cause a bump to appear.

I advise you to-

1. Take rest. It plays a key role in decreasing pain and inflammation.

2. Stop doing the activity that caused the problem, at least until their symptoms are under control.

3. Apply cold packs and take anti-inflammatory medications like Motrin to calm pain and inflammation.

I hope this answers your query.

Thank you for your help.

The little bump/lump is still there. Again, it's not painful unless I touch the actual bump, otherwise I don't know it's there. It seems to be on the side of my shin where the muscle and shin meet about 5 inches from my ankle. If I feel it or try and move it, it kind of feels like the the bump moves over something or is maybe on top of something that it roles off (if that make sense). Otherwise just a bump.

I have ran a bit but not much. I have also starting riding a motorcycle and it occurred to me yesterday that maybe shifting gears with my foot receptively may have something to do with that.

Again, If I stretch my leg out it is hard to feel anything, if I bend my leg then you can.

Does this give you any more insight? Should I just leave it be?

Thx for your help.

Brief Answer:
Due to fascial injury.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
According to your description it seems to be a fascial injury due to a repetitive stress. The injury to fascia causes the underlying muscle to bulge out and cause the swelling. Since it is painless and is not growing in size it is best to leave it as it is. Using a crepe bandage or an elastic brace might help in providing support to the area. In case the swelling increases then surgical repair of the fascia is the only option.
Hope my answer is helpful.
