Suggest Treatment For Slightly Elevated Heart Rate And Heart Palpitations

default
Posted on Mon, 22 Jun 2015
Question: My resting heart rate is 102 bpm. Also Im having what feels like very short palpatations. Should I be concerned?
I should also add that the "palpatations" are not that frequent and only happen a few times per day. Ive been drinking a lot of energy drinks in the last week and think this may the cause? Also, this happened a few years ago and aml ecg results were normal. My pcp was happy that I was fine and told to reduce stress

Brief Answer:
Possibly due to energy drink;however ECG/holter monitoring advised...

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concerns.

1. The normal heart rate varies from 60 to 100 bpm. In your case, it is slightly elevated 102 bpm.

2. There might be various factors causing such elevation including:
- consumption of drinks containing caffeine such as energy drink
- stress
- heart arrhythmia
- hormonal changes (you are not reporting your age and gender)?

3. You are saying that you had the same problems a few years ago and did ECG which resulted normal. I advise to repeat ECG again together with Holter monitoring to exclude heart arrhythmia.

If everything will result fine, then, we can determine that what you are experiencing is due to energy drinks and being under stress.

For the moment, I advise to:
- avoid drinking energy or other caffeinated drinks
- try to control stress
- increase physical activity
- eat heart-healthy foods

Hope it was of help!
