Suggest Treatment For Slight Thinning Of Bone Density In Hip
I already ask this question but did not get a response. I need the answer to this question. I recently saw an endo for the first time. She gave me a bone density scan and said I was fine except for a very slight thinning of my left hip. Years ago, I was pre diagnosed with severe anxiety and insomnia. She told me to take 2,000 IU of Vitamin D and 1,200 mg of Calcium. I began taking them a week ago and so far, my anxiety and insomnia have returned back in spades. I want to know if either of these vitamins can cause anxiety? I have heard over the internet that they can.
Internet can give misleading information
Detailed Answer:
Good day,
Noted your concern.
2000 units of Vitamin D is an optimum daily dose for your age and doesn't cause any anxiety symptoms. However, if your dietary calcium intake ( milk, cheese, yogurt) etc are good, then you will require only around 600 mg extra calcium as tablet.
We recommend 2000 IU vitamin D and 1000-1200 mg calcium ( diet+ supplement) daily. In this dose, you are unlikely to have any vitamin D and calcium toxicity.
Hypercalcemia ( excess blood calcium) and hypervitaminosis D ( excess vitamin D) can cause irritability, anxiety etc. But the dose which you are taking is okay. Infact, studies have shown that vitamin D intake in right dose helps in anxiety.
Your symptoms are likely to be due to underlying anxiety disorder and a psychiatry/psychology referral may help.
In short, I would say that you may continue the same amount of vitamin D , but may reduce calcium to 600 mg a day if your dietary calcium intake is good. If the dietary calcium intake is inadequate, please continue 1200 mg dose. Please feel free to ask further
