Suggest Treatment For Sleeplessness

default
Posted on Mon, 22 Dec 2014
Question: Triggered by my husband's affair, I am sleepless for four months now, seriously no deep sleep since early August 2013 and very light sleep of 3-2 hours on a good day. I have taken the following medication prescribed by psychiatrists:

Stressam, Remeron, Seduxen: no use after about 2 weeks.
Zoloft, Xeroquel, lexomil: again no use after 2 weeks
Zoloft, Dogmatil, lexomil: no use after 2 weeks

So currently I am on no medicine, and suffer from panic at night, clinging to my husband, who said he is so fed up. My life is like hell. Please help. Many thanks.

Brief Answer:
Psychological treatment along with medicines needed

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to HCM.
I have read your query and understand your concerns.

I think only taking medicines is not the complete treatment for your problem.

I have some suggestions for you.
1. For your problems of panic, I think the best drug would be paroxetine. It acts as antianxiety as well as sleep inducing drug. So this drug will take of your disturbed sleep as well. If need be, there are some other sleep inducing agents like zolpidem, trazodone and ativan which be taken as needed. But I must tell you that these are prescription drugs and taken only after psychiatrist's advice.

2.I think you also need psychological therapies like cognitive behavior therapy and some relaxation therapies like biofeedback and muscle relaxation. These work wonderfully well in combination with medicines.

3. You must also try to follow sleep hygiene habits like
Avoid day time naps.
Do not take tea coffee chocolates at bedtime.
Do not take heavy fatty meals at bedtime.
Take warm water bath and warm milk before going to bed.
Do not keep lying on bed for more than 20-30 minutes if you are unable to sleep. Take a walk in your balcony.
Do not discuss emotional issues at bedtime.
Have a good day-light exposure. This will normalize your sleep-wake cycle.
Practice simple relaxation techniques like deep breathing and meditation.

I would advice you to visit a psychiatrist asap.

Hope this helps you.
Thanks.
