All cancers are staged.

Squamous cell cancer can be staged by TNM. T stands for tumor and looks at the size of the tumor and also if it has spread into nearby structures (muscles,nerves bones)

N looks for involvement of lymph nodes on the same and/or opposite side of the body

M is divided into M0 (not spread to other parts) and M1 (spread to other parts).

Staging is determined by:
(1)physical examination of the lesion , surrounding skin and lymph nodes is often done to assess the stage

(2) imaging --MRI or CT scan of the involved can see if there is spread to surrounding areas (bone, muscles etc)

Imaging can also take a look at lymph nodes in the area to check for spread. Not all persons may be recommended for imaging if it appears low risk

Biopsy helps to determine the exact nature, thickness and may also see if it has spread somewhat

There are certain high risk features: (1)greater than 2 cm in diameter
(2)located on the ear, hands, genitalia, feet, central face, part of the lip
(3)person is elderly or immunosuppressed (eg on steroids or other meds that suppress the immune system)
(4)greater than 2mm thick,
(5)invading nerves and blood vessels
