Suggest Treatment For Sinus Infection

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Jul 2014
Question: Hello:

I've had a sinus infection for about 12 days. I went to a clinic and they prescribed an antibiotic and a nasal spray. It's better, but not gone by any means. (I haven't used sinutab or anything). But my ears are sore and I'm supposed to take a five-hour flight in about five or six days. Is it safe to fly or should I postpone my trip?

Brief Answer:
nasal decongestant drops,mucolytic, oral decongest

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for the query.

Sinus infections are usually treated with nasal decongestants, oral decongestants, mucolytic abd antibiotics if required. Steam inhalation does help.

If your sinus infection is partially treated, steam inhalation and mucolytic with nasal decongestants will help.

If fever or thick discharge is there, antibiotics should be started.

If you want to fly, use nasal decongestant drops and oral decongestant tablet. Also keep on chewing a gum while ascent or descent.

Feel free to ask another query.

Hello:

thank you so much. I did take antibiotics for ten days, but it's still there. Should I be taking them for longer? (I didn't think sinus infections took this long to heal). How long do these normally take to go away completely? I've been using sinus rinses as well.

If I start another round of antibiotics today and follow the other measures, should I be okay to fly safely without er, bursting an eardrum or risking my hearing?

Many thanks

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the query.

If there are no acute symptoms, there is no need to use antibiotics. Rest of the medicines stated by me should suffice.

You can safely travel after using nasal drops and chewing gum.

A two weeks use of antibiotic usually is fine but if infective process is not subsiding, a culture from sinus should provide specific antibiotic.

Feel free to ask another query.
