default
Posted on Wed, 31 Dec 2014
Question: I suffer with sinus - headache nearly all the time, sore eyes and all around the eyes, sore cheek bones and pain up the back of my head. I have been with my GP many times with this and they recommend By-Mycen have you any alternatives. I have tried the usual nasal sprays and after a while my nose bleeds - I could write a book about this. I am constantly swallowing horrible flem and my throat then gets infected, any other ideas please.

Brief Answer:
nasal saline, anti-histamines

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for your questions.

We are not sure why some people get chronic sinus infections or inflammation but it often has to do with allergens.

Here are some suggestions for you to try. Use nasal saline frequently, 4-6 times a day. It moisten the sinuses and acts as a mechanical flush to clear out allergens from the sinuses. Some people prefer the use of a neti pot for the saline and if you use that you could just do it once a day as it gives a more complete flush of the sinuses. Taking a non-sedating antihistamine, like loratadine, daily may also help. There are drugs called mast cell stabilizers that may also help, like singulair but they are prescription only.

Eating fresh fruits and vegetables and drinking at least 2-3 litres of water daily is also helpful. Avoid alcohol and caffeine as they can cause dehydration and make sinus pain worse. Avoiding allergens like smoke, dust and animals is also helpful in some cases.

Seeing an allergist and being tested for specific allergies may be helpful to you as well. Regular exercise can help with this problem so doing some regular walking is beneficial.

Good luck to you with clearing up this problem.
