Question: hello doctor i am now 24 years old... i am little concern with my liver.... i started alcohol 3 years back in july 2012 i used to drink whisky i had it for months and went for LFT in september 2012 where my results of ALT=32 (<50) , SGOT= 27 (<50) , GGTP = 24 (<55), Bilirubin, Total = 1.37 (0.20-1.20), Bilirubin, Indirect = 0.30 (<0.20) comes ,.... then i continue to drink till january 2013 and in february i again went for my LFT screening where my results come high and it was like ALT= 115 (<50), SGOT= 94 (<50), GGTP = 89 (<55), Bilirubin, Total = 0.61 (0.20-1.20) , Bilirubin, Indirect = 0.13 (<0.20)....... after this i went to gastroenterologist then he suggest for and ultrasound of abdomen where the results come normal and serum test was also negative and he give me medicine UDILIV 300mg twice a day for 14 days i did the course and after doing course i started drinking beer occasionaly and i quit alcohol for a month and again i started UDILIV 300 mg on my own for a week before test and went for test after having UDILIV 300mg twice a day for a week where in that test all things come normal ALT = 39 (<50), AST = 31 (<50), GGTP = 37 (<55)..... then i never had alcohol neither UDILIV 300mg for about month and again went for test where my result come again like AST = 45 (<50), ALT = 124 (<50), GGTP = 31 (<55)....after this test i try to divert my mind for 6 months from both alchol and UDILIV 300 mg which means 6 month i never took neither alcohol nor UDILIV 300 mg and again i went for the LFT screening where the result come was AST = 33 (<50), ALT = 69 (<50), GGTP = 31 (<55)....Then after 2 months of this test i started drinking this time occaisionly sometime whisky and sometime beer till recent 6 may and again i quit and never had till now from 6 may 2015 and i myself started again taking UDILIV 300mg and today is my 5th day of having UDILIV 300 mg

But now i am really very concerned of my health and promise my self will never have alcohol in my life but my concerned is this is taking UDILIV 300mg medicine is good for health or not is there any sever harsh side effect of taking that medicine for so long as i go through wikipedia to know about UDILIV where it says it have ursodeoxycholic acid which contains substance, is one of the secondary bile acids, which are metabolic byproducts of intestinal bacteria and there

i also see that it was written that "In double the recommended daily dose ursodeoxycholic acid reduces elevated liver enzyme levels in those with primary sclerosing cholangitis, but its use was associated with an increased risk of serious adverse events (the development of cirrhosis, varices, death or liver transplantation) in patients who received ursodeoxycholic acid compared with those who received placebo. Serious adverse events, were more common in the ursodeoxycholic acid group than the placebo group. The risk was 2.1 times greater for death, transplantation, or minimal listing criteria in patients on ursodeoxycholic acid than for those on placebo."

so my main concern is whatever the amount of UDILIV 300 mg i have taken will it going to give problems to my liver in future will i will have to go for liver transplant or something like that ?? i have also heard some doctors saying UDILIV is not meant for liver problems and if that so i want to know how it controls liver enzymes and i want my liver healthy i still have 20 UDILIV 300 mg medicine left with me .... should i finish all of them or should i stop i just want my liver to be all healthy and my liver enzymes under control like it was before in year 2012 when i dont drink at all.

i know my summary what i wrote is little big but i m getting depressed day by day by thinking this my self please help me.

Brief Answer:
Side effects of udiliv occur in few and those taking it for longer duration

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. Right now your liver enzymes are almost normal except ALT which is slightly above normal and therefore not a serious concern.

2. If you have decided to take healthy diet and stop alcohol then there is no requirement to take any more udiliv tablets. Udiliv is ursodeoxycholic acid which is one of the natural bile acids generated.

3. Every medicine might cause certain side effects and udiliv also rarely causes side effects in few patients. As you have taken udiliv for short duration and liver function tests after taking it have not shown any deterioration therefore you do not have any risk of developing problems due to taking it earlier.

4. Common side effects after taking udiliv are diarrhea, pruritus, nausea, vomiting, gallstone calcification. However have never had any of these and for the short duration that you have taken there is no risk of any particular side effect.

5. The main use of udiliv is in decreasing the production of cholesterol and dissolving the cholesterol in bile so it cannot form stones and it is taken for many months. Other uses are in primary biliary cirrhosis. It should be taken only when your doctor tells you.

6. You start to be healthy by stopping alcohol and taking care of your health. Therefore please do not get depressed and stay healthy. Please do not take any more udiliv by yourself.

7. Your liver function tests will become completely normal after 3 to 6 months if you give up drinking and stay healthy.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Brief Answer:
Risk is there in patients given udiliv for years

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

1. Your intake of udiliv has been for a short duration of up to 2 weeks and therefore you will never develop any of the associated complications which might require liver transplantation.

2. Since your liver enzymes are near normal there is no serious concern about udiliv.

3. Those who develop complications are patients taking udiliv for at least 3 months and for more than two years. You do not come in this category.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Dr.Vivek
