Suggest Treatment For Side Effects Of Ciprofloxacin
Question: Dr. XXXXXXX Schubert, In 04/08/2015 my doctor subscribed Ciprofloxacin HCL 500 mg twice a day.
When taking it, I started hurting, my whole body felt like it had been poisoned or something.
I ached all over. My joints ached and were stiff and weak. Normally an active person, It got difficult for me to get out of a chair. I had no strength in my knees, If I squat down I was unable to get up without help. I read in the side effects that in could effect tendons. I called my doctor and told her how it had affected me, she told me to keep taking it. I thought this would go away after a while, it has not. It has been almost a year now. It has changed my ability to do a lot of things I could normally do.
Shortly after my doctor joined one of the concierge services. I do not have a doctor now.
Is there a way to reverse this? What should I do?

I am sorry to hear that you are having continued pain from use of Cipro. This appears to have caused a reaction to your tendons and this does usually resolve after stopping but not in your case. I think the best course of action is to see a rheumatologist. There maybe more here than just a reaction to Cipro. You may now have rheumatoid arthritis or other autoimmune disorder. A rheumatologist would be able to get lab tests that would determine the cause of your pain. The treatment maybe starting steroids like prednisone. While waiting for a doctor the only treatment option is OTC NSAIDs like ibuprofen or naprosyn. You may also have difficulty finding a rheumatologist so a local board certified Family Doctor could help also while you are waiting.

Thank you for your reply. I was taking prednisone when taking the Cipro. I took it for 14 months, having been diagoned with Giant Cell Arterites by my neurologist.
Hopefully it is under control now.
It is difficult not having a Dr. Will a blood test show if I have RA?
I will try to find a Rheumatologist. I am so thankful for your help.
