Suggest Treatment For Side Effects Of Alka-Seltzer Plus

default
Posted on Wed, 15 Feb 2017
Question: I've been taking all seltzer plus for a cold/flu. Active ingredients are acetaminophen 500mg, dextromethorphan hydrobromide 20mg, guaifenesin 400 mg, and phenylephrine hydrochloride 10mg.
I am experiencing very slight dizziness and some irritation on my face. I'm not going to take anymore, however I am wondering if I should take some Benadryl in case this is an allergic reaction?
Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Dizziness is very common with flu meds rash doesn't look drug related.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to HealthCareMagic, I am Dr Muhammd Ahmad, I have closely read your question and I understand your concerns, I will hereby guide you regarding your health related problem.

I have closely seen the pictures you sent, the rash you have is nothing like a rash due to drug allergy , you have to consider other reasons like cosmetic allergy , any bug or irritation due to shaving.

Slight dizziness is probably the most common side effect of flu drugs, so do not worry about that, they have anti cough agents and de congenstants which do cause dizziness ,increased sleepiness (hyper somnia) and some lethargy so that is not to be worried about. This effect will go away as you stop taking the medication.

You can indeed take Benadryl for three nights , this will help with skin allergy even if it's due to a cosmeti, drug or anyother reason. There is nothing to be worried about use simple OTC ointment for skin rash and try to control flu with simple remedies like steam inhalation, Tylenol, and banadryl for three nights. Try Alegra-D if you have considerable nasal congestion otherwise do not use nasal de congestant at all as this causes dizziness and sedation in many people.

I hope this answered your question, if you have more feel free to ask, otherwise close the discussion and rate it.

Regards.
