Suggest Treatment For Sharp Pain Under Ribs While Coughing

Posted on Thu, 2 Jul 2015
Question: I have been coughing with a 'wet' cough for several weeks. This escalated into an extremely painful chest on my left side when coughing, moving or sneezing. My GP diagnosed pleurisy, although could not hear the signs of such when listening to my chest. I have completed a double dose of amoxicillin and have been taking myprodol for the past 5 days. The pain has eased, but I am still sore and need to take the pain meds.

Today, whilst coughing, I felt a sharp, snapping pain under my ribs. The resulting pain was severe. Is this still pleurisy or perhaps a misdiagnosis?

Brief Answer:
Better to get done chest x ray.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on HCM.
I can understand your concern.
By your history and description, possibility of pleurisy is more. And most common cause for pleurisy is lung infection (pneumonia).
You are still feeling pain after antibiotic, so better to get done chest x ray to rule out pneumonia.
If pneumonia is there than you may need higher antibiotics.
But if chest x ray is normal than no need to worry for pneumonia.
You might be having musculoskeletal pain. So apply warm water pad on affected site and start painkiller and muscle relaxant drugs.
So first get done chest x ray and than plan your treatment accordingly.
Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health. Thanks.

Thank you for your response. Is it possible to have pneumonia without an associated fever etc? Can ones body suppress an infection like pneumonia?

Yes, pneumonia can present even in the absence of fever.
You are taking an antibiotic, so this can also suppress fever. Early pneumonia can also present without fever.
So better to get done chest x ray to rule out pneumonia as you are not improving with antibiotics.
