I'm not sure the mole has been there for so long I don't realise it as its on the back of my head and there are no secretions and the pain is intermittent, comes and goes for short periods

Probably the mole is compressing one of the nerves that supply the scalp, and this is causing the pain.
NSAID drugs (Ibuprofen 400mg eg. when in pain, not more than 1200 mg/day) should help improve the pain.
Definite solution is the surgical excision of the mole using local anesthesia.
