Suggest Treatment For Severe Shoulder Pain

Posted on Mon, 30 Jan 2017
Question: Shoulder pain. I am 59 years old and am an active weight lifter. I did see a physical therapist who told me the pain was not joint related but was muscular. It hurts when I put on a jacket, meaning when I put my arm out to the side and raise it. It doesn't hurt to lift weights overhead or bench press. I cannot lay on my left side (the shoulder that hurts) during sleep for any length of time as the pain will waken me. I have had this for over several months. My question is it bursitis or a torn muscle or is it joint related?

Brief Answer:
Get ultrasound shoulder done.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have read your query.

Based on the given description, the pain you are explaining are during specific movements only. This type of pain is more like due to tear of some muscles mostly. However for exact diagnosis to be made ultrasound shoulder joint should be done. Scan will tell about condition of muscles and bursae. I'm not sure if your physio can order it. If he can't please ask for a referral to an orthopedic surgeon.

Till then keep on having medication and physiotherapy which you are doing.

Apply IFT from your physiotherapist.

But avoid weightlifting till the report comes.

Your actual treatment will depend upon report.

I hope it helps.

Thanks,
