Suggest treatment for severe shoulder pain in an elderly patient

Posted on Sat, 8 Jun 2019 in Bones, Muscles and Joints
Question: My 84-year-old mother has been having severe pain in her right shoulder for two weeks. The pain radiates down the front of her arm to her elbow. It hurts more at night when she's in bed. Raising her arm over her head relieves the pain slightly.

Brief Answer:
Can be tendonitis or bursitis.

Detailed Answer:

From the symptoms that you have described, it seems to be Rotator cuff tendonitis or shoulder impingement syndrome which causes irritation and inflammation of the rotator cuff and the bursa. Non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like Ibuprofen or Aleve can help with pain control and decrease inflammation. MRI scan will help in proper diagnosis.

Activities that cause symptoms should be avoided. A physical therapy program that focuses on establishing non-painful shoulder motion and strengthening of the shoulder muscles will also be helpful.

I hope this answers your query.
