Brief Answer:
Spine disc herniation.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Such pain is usually caused by spine disc herniation which compresses the nerve. This nerve goes down to the leg what causes pain radiation. The pain should be more intense when moving and a little bit less intense when lying down.
Your uncle needs NSAID medicines (non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs) as the compression causes inflammation what aggravates the pain. He should try Meloxicam or Diclophenac along with morphine. Tetrazepam or Tolperison as a muscle relaxing medicines should be also helpful. But such treatment is only temporal solution. To solve the problem he needs to have spine MRI and consul neurosurgeon.
And one more thing. If the pain is radiating to the groin and he has problems with urinating, kidney stone can also give such symptoms.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

The MRI scan has been scheduled but is a week away and in the mean while we're trying to find a way to get relief from the excruciating pain. My uncle is also diabetic. Will meloxicam/diclophenac and tetrazepal bring the pain down?

Brief Answer:
.

Detailed Answer:
Yes, Meloxicam/Diiclophenac and Tetrazepam should give much relief. Just note that Meloxicam or Diclophenac should be taken with Omeprasole 20 mg once a day to protect the stomach. Tetrazepam will cause sleepiness.
Heat is also a good way to relax muscles (hot bath should help a little).
All mentioned medicines can be taken in case of Diabetes.
