Suggest Treatment For Severe Neck Pain

default
Posted on Wed, 15 Mar 2017
Question: I've had severe neck pain starting in my left sternocleidomastoid down my shoulder. Sometimes my left jaw hurts too. I've seen many doctors and dentists thinking it could be related to posture or tmj problems but results in little to no solution. The very odd factor is this pain essentially disappears the moment I start chewing (gum, food, etc) and reappears the second I stop chewing. It is usually the opposite with true tmd issues. Why would chewing relieve the pain and what could my problem be stemming from?

Brief Answer:
NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting the question.
I have gone through your medical history in detail.

TMJ related causes, first of all will never cause pain down to the shoulders as both the nerves are totally different.

A facial nerve inflammation or a nerve compression / inflammation in the neck vertebrae can cause such kind of pain.

But pain disappearing during chewing is rather unusual and needs further evaluation.

Inner ear affections or eustachian tube related causes can cause such symptoms.

You should consult a otorhynologist and get a MRI and otoscopy done to rule this out.

A pinched nerve in neck can be ruled out by an MRI of the neck.

I hope the answer was useful.

Get back to me once the reports are ready.

Feel free to ask me any follow up queries that you may have.

Thank you.
Kind regards.

Should I also see a neurologist to rule out the pinched nerve? If so, Is there a specific type of neurologist? I don't have any numbing sensation. It's more a severe soreness pain/ache that is most severe right under my ear behind my jaw and radiates down to the shoulder. The pain also is less severe first thing in the morning and gets progressively worst throughout the day.
