Brief Answer:
Coumandin may be the cause of hematoma formation, consult doctor imm.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query on HealthcareMagic.
Your history suggests that your husband is on coumandin.
Coumandin is a preparation which inhibits clot formation in body and it is prescribed when there is high risk of clotting.
Digging may have caused trauma to soft tissues.
Blue-black discoloration of the thigh is most probably due to hematoma formation.
In health, the homeostasis of body tries to control bleeding by platelet aggregation & adhesion, platelet plug formation and clot formation at the site of injury.
However, when coumadin is used, the clotting pathway is inhibited and thus uncontrolled bleeding may occur.
I suggest you to consult your treating doctor at the earliest to manage the condition.
Coumandin may have to stopped or dose may be reduced for a short while.
In addition, prothrombin time and INR need to be done to monitor the treatment with coumandin.

Thanks and take care
