default
Posted on Mon, 2 Jan 2017
Question: I am having extremely pain on the upper outer side of my left knee & just below knee cap on the inner side of knee, also on the outer side of upper thigh going to buttocks. I've been hurting for about a week. Ice does not seem to help much, heat feels better than ice, I've had it wrapped & elevated over the weekend without improvement. Also taking Ibuprofen 800MG & Oxycodone/acetaminophen 5-325mg.

Brief Answer:
Knee effusion / sciatica

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting the question.

I have gone through your question and the attached photographs.

The left knee appears to be swollen and sore.
You also have bent knees (both the knees are curved outwards).
This leads to imbalance in the weight bearing axis of bodyweight causing internal knee ligaments to be under continuous stress.

You might have injured one of the ligaments inside the left knee, especially the meniscus, when you twisted the knee a week ago.

The pain on the upper thigh and buttocks seems to be due to sciatica (inflammation of the sciatic nerve).

Considering the fact that the treatment you have been taking till now has not helped,i suggest you to get a MRI of the knee done.Depending upon the reports,we can decide further line of treatment.

Applying compression bandage around the painul area and local analgesic gel will help.

Ice packs won't be of much help.Infact,i would suggest you to take hot fomentation twice a day.

Avoid squatting or sitting cross legged.

Get back to me once the MRI reports are ready.

I hope the answer was useful.

Thank you.

Kind regards.
