Suggest Treatment For Severe Joints And Muscle Pain
Question: My 90 year old father has prostate cancer that has metastasized to the lymph nodes. His PSA was 13. The oncologist put him on Lupron 16 months ago. First, it was every three months, now it is once a month. His PSA is below 1 now, but my father has SEVERE joint pain, muscle pain and weakness. It has gotten progressively worse. My father was a strong, fit man for his age, and now is reduced to a weak, feeble person who is in constant pain that even interferes with sleep. His internist has prescribed arthritis meds, ibuprofen, and now narcotics. Nothing touches the pain. His quality of life is so diminished. My questions are: Does a 90 year old male need Lupron the same as a 60 year old? Is he receiving too much? Can he go off of it until symptoms progress?

Of course any drug which cut offs the male hormone will produce such type of symptoms and since your father is very old, the symptoms will be of much severity.
The dose of lupron remains same irrespective of age.
If the PSA is stable, and the bone scan does not show any disease progression, lupron can be stopped and other drug known as bicalutamide can be started. It preserves quality of life and also checks the cancer.
