Question: Hi Doctor,

Greetings for the day.
I am a 28 years old male employee. My father has problems related to knees i.e. joint pain while going downstairs. I want to know if there is a way by which i can prevent that from happening in my case. Sometime i feel mild pain in my left knee. I use stairs mostly and i go out on trek and hiking at least once in two months.

Brief Answer:
Osteoarthritis

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for your query.

Knee pain while going down stairs usually indicates a problem with the knee cap. It can be due to various reasons. As your father is facing this problem it may most likely be due to Osteoarthritis which is due to wear and tear of the joint(age related).

For you it can be due to excessive stress on your knee maybe due to running/ trekking as you said.

Preventive measures can be through proper diet(milk, fresh fruits and vegetables), strengthening exercises and graded exercises , avoid prolonged postures (sitting/standing) , weight loss ( if applicable) .

I hope this answered your query.

With regards,
