Question: Good afternoon,
I have a question about hair loss. I recently had a baby who is currently 6 months old and when I was about 5 months pregnant I had a patch of hairloss. I did not treat it, and the hair grew back on its own. After delivery , 5 months later i lost my hair again in the same spot. Is that permanent?

Please upload a photo and provide some information

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for using Healthcaremagic to post your health query.
I read carefully your question and I understand your concern.

If that hair loss is permanent or not, depends on the cause of the hail loss.

If it is a hairless patch, clearly visible, I need to see a photo of it to examine the skin underneath it. The skin might have a fungal infection. The treatment will make the hair grow again after some time. (You can simply upload/attach the pictures at the reports section of this web page).

If the hair loss is uniform in all your head, then it may be something normal (because once in a while the old hair gradually falls down and a new hair would regrow.

Also, let me know some information about your general health- last time you did blood tests and if you have anemia or thyroid problem? If you suffer from any chronic problem?
Do you breastfeed your baby and in this case, are you taking any multivitamin?
How is your diet?
Do you have skin problems in other parts of the body?

All these question will help me give an information that would determine the understanding of the cause and the treatment that I will advise to take for your problem.

Looking forward to your follow up question.

Regards,
Dr. Papaqako

Brief Answer:
Wait to see the body reaction for one month- the hair might regrow.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for the follow up question and for all your health information.
I watched carefully your photos and reviewed the information. I am glad that you are healthy and are taking good care of yourself.

One of the problems that I would think to be causing the hair loss is a fungal infection. But you had taken terbinafine, which would cover the treatment of it.

Also, on the other side, because you had this hair loss while you were pregnant and also now that you stopped your birth control, I think it may be related with the hormonal changes in your body.

In both cases, I would suggest to wait and not take a treatment for some time:
- Because you might still be under the effect of the antifungal and if it is related with a fungal infection, the hair should gradually regrow. Also, if you are breastfeeding, we would want you to avoid as much as possible medicines.
- Because if it is related with the hormonal changes, they should stabilize soon, especially if you are breastfeeding.

If not better in one month or if worse, consider doing a fungal culture of the skin in that area, and also measuring the hormonal levels (Or maybe just considering using again a birth control tablet).

Hope that makes sense and is clear.

Kind regards,
Dr. Papaqako
