Suggest Treatment For Severe Hair Loss While Suffering From GERD And Gynecomastia
My name is Noor and I am 25 years old. Since the past couple of months I have been experiencing an increase in hair fall mostly at the crown on my head. I fear that I may be suffering from Male pattern baldness.
I have a history of GERD and hence had to take Pan 20 and sometimes pan 40 tablets. Is pan responsible for the hair loss?
I also suffer from gynecomastia . Is gynecomastia and hair fall some how related to hormonal imbalance?
Please suggest me what diagnostics are required to reach the root cause of the hair fall problem?
Please also suggest any medications and therapies .
Thanks and regards,
Noor
Minoxidil and saw palmetto extract
Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us
I am Dr.Kakkar (Dermatologist). I have gone through your query and I have noted your concern.
Androgenetic alopecia or male pattern baldness has just one predisposition and that is Genetic or family history.
Gynecomastia can have a hormonal origin like excess estrogen/ androgen which can lead to overgrowth of glandular tissue or it can be purely due to excess accumulation of fat. Weight reduction may help. Logicallly, gynecomastia and androgenetic alopecia should have an inverse relationship because while relative lack of testosterone may cause gynecomastia, this should infact prove beneficial for androgenetic alopecia which is driven by actually testosterone in a genetically predisposed male.
Antacids like pantaprazole does not lead to hair fall.
Diagnosis of androgenetic alopecia is clinical and no lab tests are required. It has a classic pattern of hair thinning and hair loss. The front, mid and vertex of the scalp are the sites most affected by hair thinning and hair loss in addition to receding anterior hair line in males.
I would suggest you to start with minoxidil 5% solution, 1 ml, twice daily at scalp skin. In addition you may also take Tab. Androanagen (Saw palmetto extract) once daily.
Treatment is long term and goal of medical treatment is to arrest or slow further progression of hair loss.
