Question: My mom is 91. 5'..112 lbs...She has diarrhea and is taking Immodium liquid. It works well. But when she is having the diarrhea, she will go normally and the within an hour, will go watery once or twice more, and those 2 times almost having an accident before she gets to the bath room .the urge is really fast.
1. Like i say , the Immodium works , but what could be causing the urge to go so quickly the second or often the third time?
2. What can she do to avoid dehydration and liss of electrolytes?

Brief Answer:
Further evaluation needed. Oral Rehydration Solution to avoid dehydration

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thank you posting your query at HCM.

I have noticed current presentation of the patient but you did not mention the history of present symptoms? furthermore, did she visit treating physician and were any tests done?

Certain tests are required ; such as, stool test, stool culture, blood routine test.

Increased frequency of diarrhea maybe due to underlying infection which maybe requiring management accordingly.

Therefore, your advised to visit treating physician to prescribe tests that may help to find the underlying cause.

Meanwhile advice in terms of diet:
- banana with yogurt
- ingest soft food ( toast, boiled rice)
- include yogurt in meals
- ingest small meals frequently
- avoid food rich in fiber
- avoid oily food
-OTC probiotic medication maybe used
- ingest plentiful water/juice or both

Secondly, diarrhea results in loss of water and electrolytes from the body. Therefore, OTC oral rehydration solution maybe used to prevent dehydration and compensate the water and electrolyte loss.

Hope to answer your concern.
Any further questions are most welcome.

Wish the patient good and sound health.

Thank you.
