Question: what to do about violent diarrhea. No stomache cramps or generally aching. No fever. Unfortunately had some cold food in Shanghai China. Started two nights ago after about 4 or 5 hrs after dinner.

Dear Dr. Rauf

1. how many loose stools are you passing in a day?
Squirting is more like it about every hour - uncontrolably, usual race to the bathroom. I got some medicine from the Chinese -Berberine Hydrochloride tablets - small yellow pills between a baby aspirin and an adult aspirin in size. They said to take three at once, every 4 hours. I took three a while back and I have stopped having the violent diarrhea, but still feel a bit queasy and tired.

2. is there any blood or mucus in it?
none that I can see. Doesn't resemble the severe food poisoning I got here three years ago that put me in the hospital for two days.

3. is there any history of vomiting?
no vomiting
4. are you able to drink and eat?
yes
5. do you have diabetes, hypertension or any other illness?
Moderately high blood pressure. I take Verelan for it everyday, along with an antidepressant, baby aspirin, and omeprazole for acid reflux

6. are you on any medication?
In addition to the above flonase for allergies and alphagen eye drops for early stage glaucoma

7. any other symptom that you would like to share?
Maybe a little light headed

Brief Answer:
Most probably Acue Enteritis

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thank you for the answers. I have gone through them. You most probably are suffering from Acute Enteritis. If i were your treating doctor then i would have advised following things:

> Take lots of fluids( water, juices)
> Metronidazole thrice a day for 5 days
> Take Zinc supplement once a day for 10 days
> Drotaverine thrice a day for 3 days
> Avoid sugar related products. They increase diarrhea

Hopefully you will see an improvement in 2-3 days. If condition remains same or aggravates then you need to visit hospital and get an appointment for a "gastroenterologist" for further workup.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help if not then don't forget to close the discussion and rate it.
Wishing you good health !!
