Brief Answer:
hold off solids, fluid and electrolyte replacement, probiotics, peptobismol

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Normally when a person diarrhea, it means that the intestines are irritated or inflamed.
They are not ready to absorb any food, if solid food is used, it would unfortunately irritate the intestines further and this would delay healing and the diarrhea would continue for longer.

This means that he should: (1) hold off ALL SOLID FOOD till there is a 4 hour window of no diarrhea
When he goes 4 hours with no diarrhea, then he can start back on solids but should start with toast, biscuits and other dry foods

(2)it is good that he is using fluids such as the soup. It would best to consider oral hydration packets that are sold for diarrhea/vomiting or a sport drink such as gatorade
The oral hydration drinks or sport drinks would give him both fluids and electrolytes

(3)probiotics would help to heal the colon

(4)medication can sometimes keep the infection inside the colon so it is only used if the diarrhea has been going on for a long period of time (more than 7 days ) or it is very severe
Peptobismol or lomotil are used

I hope this helps , feel free to ask any other questions

I had a complete hysterectomy by Davinci Robot on 8/25. I left the hospital on 8/26. I was back in the hospital on 10/01 with severe dehydration after diarrhea and vomiting. I was told I had an ileus . I was released on 10/06 and today 10/10 I am starting with diarrhea again. I do not have the nausea that I had before I was admitted to the hospital on 10/01. Could this diarrhea just be my body getting used to eating again? I was NPO for 4 days while in the hospital.

Nine years ago I got very sick & ended up in the hospital for a week. I saw several specialists & had several tests done & was eventually diagnosed with Intestinal Lymphangiectasia. I was put on a low-fat high protein diet & several different medications and after 6-8 months I was completely back to normal. I got off of medications a year later & have not had any problems since. However, a month ago I started coming down with the same symptoms: low protein count, extreme diarrhea, low vitamin counts, and edema in my legs. I was referred to a gastroenterologist; however, he doesnt seem convinced that this diagnosis was correct & has been running a battery of basic tests (Celiac s disease & other food intolerances). I am getting frustrated because I feel that I was diagnosed correctly, especially because I was sick for about 2 years before the diagnosis & then got well in 6-8 months after diagnosis, and because I had all of these tests before & it took a team of several specialized doctors to actually find a diagnosis. Can my family physician prescribe the medications that I took before? Is there a different type of doctor that specializes in RARE intestinal disorders? Is there a doctor in the US that has experience with this disease? What tests should I request my doctor to perform? I should also note that I was recenly diagnosed with Grave s Disease & I am a 25 year old female.
