Suggest Treatment For Severe Diarrhea And Abdominal Bloating

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Aug 2015
Question: My husband has had abdominal problems for years. He and I believe he may have Chrons as opposed to IBS. He has diarrhea pretty much daily, he experiences bloating, and cramping in the abdomen. He is tired a lot and experiences joint pain. We recently got married and this concerns us both. He has seen general practitioners but they have never checked for Chrons, he has had colonoscopy done recently and that came out cancer negative. He has also suffered from occasional bouts of diverticulitis. He has found some relief through taking Imodium for several days, then not taking several days in cycles. Stress seems to bring out the symptoms more frequently. When we are out driving, he may stop every 20-30 minutes to run to the restroom, sometimes going, sometimes nothing. He is embarrassed by this issue and fear soiling himself and so when leaving the house for work, or other outings he wears male depends under his underwear. Do you have any suggestions on how we should proceed? He is 60 years old.

Brief Answer:
Need a colonic biopsy

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

Having recurrent diarrhoea does not always mean chrons disease. It could be several things including malabsorption. Here is how you should go about it

1. Make sure he takes a caffeine free and gluten free diet
2. Avoid food items which might promote gastric motility. This included banana, garlic, spicy food and oily food
3. You must approach a gastroenterologist as soon as possibly. I recommend that he undergoes biopsy of the colon and also stool must be sent for ova, cyst and culture
4. consume lot of probiotics like plain yoghurt
5. Vsl-3 is a fda approved drug for irritable Bowel syndrome. Let him take one daily
6. continue taking Imodium

I hope I was of help, if you have any further queries please get back to me
