Question: I have have a very wet cough for 2 weeks now. For 1 week prior, I had fever aches and flu like symptoms. Went to a urgent care clinic, x-ray dx. me with Bronchitis. They put me on Amox-Clav 500-125 BID, guaiFENesin-Codein 100-10MG/5ML , 2 Tsp. every 4 to 6 hrs. and a inhaler Levalbuterol tartate HFA every 4 to 6 hrs. for wheezing. STILL have a very wet cough, that makes my chest feels like it is vibrating. Most of the time I'm coughing up foamy white substance. Every few days it will change and is a very thick dark green. Feel weak, no energy, and unless I take cough med. , hard to sleep. The only thing that has helped any was the cough med. and inhaler. Antibotic runs out tomorrow. I don't mind going to a Dr. , but I am self pay.

Brief Answer:
you have to go to the doctor...

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I understand your frustration... here is a list of possible explanations for your condition.

- a COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) exacerbation: bronchodilators may help but sometimes more aggressive treatment is required. The doctor should evaluate your progress (if any), symptoms and findings from clinical examination and perhaps also add a second bronchodilator to your regimen or even corticosteroids. A more 'advanced' antibiotic might be necessary.
- resistant pathogen: if the antibiotic you've used is not effective against the pathogen then you're not going to see any improvement until your body manages to cope with the infection by itself. Another antibiotic might be required.
- viral infection: in such cases the antibiotics make no difference and you'll just have to wait for the infection to run its course.

Antibiotic options include drugs like moxifloxacin which manages most community respiratory pathogens in COPD patients. Ciprofloxacin or prulifloxacin might be more appropriate for patients with serious COPD and/or bronchiectasis and suspicion for Pseudomonas.

So in conclusion a visit to your doctor is recommended if you've experienced no improvement at all so far. I hope you find my comments helpful!

Kind Regards!
