Suggest Treatment For Severe Cough And Wheezing

default
Posted on Wed, 9 Nov 2016
Question: My live-in girlfriend keeps waking up roughly 5:30-6am wheezing with uncontrollable/unproductive coughing. No over the counter meds seems to be working, for ex; cold and flu liquid and benadryl.
She has a cat as well I believe we may have minor to moderate black mold issues. I as well seem to have minor allergy symptoms such as sinus pressure, minor coughing. We also sleep with a fan on which may circulate dust but I do keep up our furnace filter replacement. One more thing, we live in a rental and our carpet is old and degraded. We have cleaned it with allergen centered carpet cleaner multiple times over the past year but I feel it maybe a lost cause. Her symptoms seem to be worsening over time and I feel our house is the contributing factor.
Can allergies turn into asthma like symptoms? Thank you for your time.
Sincerely, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Possible asthma attack or anxiety disorder

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX

Thank you for using HCM to post your query.
I read it carefully and I understand your concern.

What you are describing seems like an asthma attack. If it is happening more then once/month during night, then she need to see as soon as possible a doctor to examine her and to diagnose asthma.

Something she can do it is to purchase a Ventolin inhaler and try to apply it wheb she has a crises. If better, then we can surely say it is acute asthma.

If not, and if everything results normal in her lungs, then it may be generalised anxiety attacks.

If it is asthma, then for sure you will need to take care of the possible allergens in the house.

Hope this is helpful.
