Question: Hello, I quit smoking. I have been smoke free for two weeks now. I am not been able to have a bm. There is definite air flow, just no product. I used to smoke just to be able to have a bm. Fiber, probotics, laxtives, and magnesium citrate do not work for me. There is pressure pain 4 out of 10. Is this normal? What course of action should i take? thank you for your time and advise, it is very much appreciated.

Brief Answer:
No BM for two weeks is not normal

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic.

Absence of bowel movements beyond two days is considered abnormal and defined as constipation. Presence of pain and no bowel movements for last two weeks is never normal and there is definite need to intervene.

My first choice in current situation is use of lactulose 20 ml at bedtime and 10 ml in the following morning. It is possible that constipation will be relieved. Since it is prescription medication it is important to discuss with your doctor before its use.

In case it does not work for you application of enema is minimum requirement.

The third option (in order) is manual removal of feces so the obstruction is relieved and proper bowel movements can be started.

I hope this helps you.
If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you.
If not, you may close the discussion and if possible you may rate the answer for my future patients.

Would a bowel obstruction cause burning sensation in and around the navel?

I have tried magnesium citrate and nothing happened. no bowel movement and no discomfort.

Brief Answer:
Generally No

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for reverting back to me.

I also fear the failure of lactulose thats why included three strategies in order to put your bowel back to functioning.

Regarding your question pain around naval area my answer is no as bowel obstruction often leads to diffuse abdominal pain and localized pain is very common. In addition obstruction will lead to swelling and no passage of gas which is not applicable here.

I hope this helps you.
Thanks and regards.
