Question: I have a very bad cold and have been sick off an on for over a month. I had chest xray and it shows no pneumonia (which I have had in the past). I'm still coughing but not bringing anything up. My temp was 38 but down now. I am levofloxacin and an expectorant. I'm 74 years old and otherwise in very good health. I want to know how long I can expect to be sick.

Brief Answer:
Difficult to say the exact time but you should be alright in a week or so.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

Thanks for posting your query on HealthcareMagic.

Sometimes cough takes longer to go away even after infection is under control as the airways become hypersensitive. You may take a tablet of monteleukast lc daily and nebulization with duolin and budecort respules for some time. Protect your self against extreme cold temperature and dust and smoke. I'm sure you will be fine soon.

Wishing you good health.

Could you please explain what it is you said I should take in lay terms. If it's over the counter?
I feel no better today I'm still really tired and staying in bed and still coughing. Also feel cold and think the antibiotic is giving me diarrhea. My head is still clogged and my chest feels cold inside. I'm not sick often and I have to fly (short flight) on Thursday. Will sudafed help?
Thank you

Brief Answer:
Monteleukast-levocetrizine is used in allergic cough.

Detailed Answer:

Monteleukast-levocetrizine is an antiallergic and is used in allergic cough and in hypereactive airways. As I said, the airways may become oversensitive after a bout of infection and there may be persistent cough. This drug has found to be useful in such cough. You may also take nebulization with duolin and budecort respules to relax th eairways thus helping in the cough. You will have to check if these are available over the counter in your city, otherwise you may contact your local physician for the prescription. Yes Sudafed can be taken.

Take care.
