Suggest Treatment For Severe Anxiety While On Zoloft

Posted on Tue, 31 Jan 2017
Question: I am a 29year old female that suffers from severe blushing since childhood. My parents never sought help for me because they said I would grow out of it. It's so bad that I've quit collage and I avoid social situations unless I'm drinking. When I was old enough to seek treatment myself my doctor prescribed me with Celexa which only helped some and them it became worse,iv3 also tried zoloft with the same effects, iv3 now been off everything for maybe 6 months but my anxiety and fear of blushing is the worst. Iv3 tried herbal supplements but nothing seems to help. I don't like the feeling I get from antidepressants but I'm at a loss. I have an outgoing personality if I could get through this I just know it. I'm in desperate need of help. I have a 3 yr old son and a fiance and I need to be able to take charge of my life for them.I hate feeling this way. I even considered the ets surgery

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for your question.

What you are describing is blushing leading to social anxiety and generalized anxiety disorder. There are a couple options for you. The first is medication -- and the gold standard is treatment for at least 6 weeks with the maximum dose of an antidepressant such escitalopram, venlafaxine, or bupropion. Alternatives include clonazepam, a benzodiazepine, or buspirone, an atypical anxiolytic. Sometimes neuroleptics such as quetiapine can also work. The second major option is psychotherapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, which avoids medications and is just as effective.
