Suggest Treatment For Severe Abdominal Discomfort With Vomiting Caused By Food Allergy

Posted on Fri, 29 Jan 2016
Question: So, over the past 5 years I have a reoccurring condition of feeling poisoned! I have just had another bout of this 48 hr. condition, probably 7-9 occurrences over this time period, and a couple have occurred nearly at similar times of the calendar year. Symptoms... initial discomfort in stomach, then distended stomach, then severe discomfort for the next 12-20 hours, primarily abdominal, but not isolated to a particular area of the stomach. This on a couple occasions has led to vomiting which only brings bile. Severe sweating, over the duration of the condition. Condition ALWAYS subsides within 48 hrs almost like clockwork, The condition brings flu like symptoms, body aches along with the discomfort of a severe hangover! I have had medical blood tests to no avail, including ultra-sound of gall bladder, all revealing nothing abnormal. Urine is dark on second day and very bubbly on second and third day (like I poured dish soap into the toilet!). I have a suspicion at this point that I might have a mushroom intolerance condition, as this has been one of the foods common to the occurrence (except this last bout), I have eliminated mushrooms from my diet altogether and have missed a couple of these occurrences that seemed to be common to the calendar. Ideas? If this is a histamine release issue is there some neutralizing agent that I might try to isolate it or to rule something out. I did have a couple mushrooms one eve, (only 2) and did have a mild occurrence, so I am very suspicious. Need a solution to kill this in advance of it making me so sick and lying horizontal for 24 hours of hell! Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Get done stool microscopic examination and total IgE level.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
By your history and description possibility of food allergy (especially mushrooms) is more.
Best treatment for this is elimination of suspected food.
For confirmation you need to get done
1. Food allergy testing
2. Stool microscopic examination for eosinophilia.
3. Serum IgE level.
If any of these is positive then possibility of food allergy is more.
So please let me know if you had all these tests done or not.
Oral combination of antihistamine and anti allergic drugs is useful in food allergy.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.

Great...Thanks for the response. I have not had any allergy testing done to date. Elimination of mushrooms has seemed to helped, although I have no direct understanding of this recent bout, as no mushrooms were eaten to my knowledge, also, from my reading there may be a time delay associated with my body's reaction, so when I got exposed (if this is the issue) makes this more of a mystery. Question... so, when or how long would the active agent remain in my stool or blood for these tests? Would I have to be having the condition for the test to determine the specific allergen? I really would hate to have to suffer thru another bout of this but it might be worth it to eat a couple mushrooms to fully understand why my body reacts so violently to whatever is poisoning me and to never have this reoccur. Thanks for your input. One more thing... Is there a specific over the counter antihistamine like Benadryl that you might recommend in the event of a re-occurrence or to minimize it's impact? Thanks much for your time and interaction. Best regards, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
No need to eat mushrooms for the test.

No need to eat mushrooms for the test.
You simply go to the laboratory and get done stool microscopic examination.
Give blood for food allergy testing and serum IgE level.
And your current episode might be due to mushroom like protein from some other food stuff.
Normally, high protein foods like eggs, mushrooms, non vegetarian are more allergic. These foods contain more protein and most of the food allergy is due to proteins. So protein which is present in mushrooms will definitely present in some other food stuff and you might ate it and had similar kind of reaction.
So get done food allergy testing.

Dr. Bhavsar,

two questions...

1. How long would the violating protein remain in my blood or stool after an occurrence to be detected by these tests.

2. Is there a specific over the counter antihistamine like Benadryl that you might recommend in the event of a re-occurrence or to minimize it's impact?

Thanks...

And you can take levocetrizine or fexofenadine and montelukast combination as a rescue drug.
Please let me know your weight so that I can tell you dose of this drug.
I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.

Thanks for your follow up question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Your weight is around 88 kgs. So take levocetrizine (5mg) and montelukast (10mg) twice daily.
Or fexofenadine (120mg) and montelukast (10mg) twice daily.
If more severe reaction then take prednisone (5mg) twice daily.
