Question: the top portion of my right thumbnail has separated from the bottom layer. vertically, right down the middle. as it grows out, it is not healing from the bottom. also, my left thumbnail is starting to do it as well, from the top of the nail. I did not injure either thumb. any diagnosis or suggestions?

Brief Answer:
Could be Onycholysis

Detailed Answer:
Hello

My name is Dr Muhammad Ali Rauf & i will look into your problem.

I have gone through your query and would be happy to assist you. Your problem is suggesting onycholysis. It is a common nail disorder in which there is loosening or separation of a fingernail from its nail bed. It usually starts at the tip of the nail and progresses back. Separation can have a number of causes but is typically related to trauma or a fungal infection of the nail. As you mentioned that there is no history of trauma so second option could be fungal infection. Is there discoloration of nail and/or painful? If this is a fungal infection then a simple treatment with general care can cure it in 4-6 weeks. I would suggest you to visit a Dermatologist at a hospital near your area as soon as possible as it can spread to other nails as well. He will examine nail thoroughly and will perform KOH test which will confirm if this is fungal infection or not. In case of fungal infection he will start systemic anti-fungal medication which will cure the disease. Meanwhile i would also suggest you to keep your hand dry and keep your towel separated from other family members.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help if not then don't forget to close the discussion and rate it.
Wishing you good health !!
