Suggest Treatment For Sensitivity In The Upper Molars

default
Posted on Mon, 20 Mar 2017
Question: I was getting some sensitivity in my right upper molar. I went to my dentist and they took an xray and scraped around the area. They did not find anything and I did not feel any pain when they tapped in that area. They suggested I take amoxicillen 250mg for 5 days. I said I did not want to take antibiotics and they agreed that I just monitor my condition and if it starts to worsen, to call them. I had hip replacement back in 2005 and take amoxicillen before every exam and teeth cleaning. I did not take any meds before this exam. My dentist was not concerned, but should I be concerned?

Brief Answer:
Antibiotics have no role in examination

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for writing in.

First of all, I would like to inform you that antibiotics are given to suppress infection like an abscess.

You don't need to take it before the examination.

If your X-ray showed nothing then you don't need to take an antibiotic. Probably you are having sensitivity due to loss of enamel that occurs due to hard brushing or it can be due to receding gums that does not get picked up in the X-ray.

Rather you should start using some desensitizing toothpaste and see if it improves. Don't do for antibiotics if you don't have any infection.
It would be better if you can send me a report of your X-ray. You can simply upload it at the reports section of this web-page.

Hope I answered your query,

Wishing you good health, feel free to ask further.
Kind Regards

Dr XXXXXXX thanks for your response and explanation. I do not have the xrays, but I will take your advice and use a more sensitive toothpaste. But why does my dentist require me to take four 500 mg of amoxicillen before teeth cleaning?

Brief Answer:
Gum Inflammation

Detailed Answer:
As I already mentioned that antibiotics are taken to control infection.
You might be having swollen gums and to control bleeding during scaling he might have asked you to take it prophylactically so that your inflammation subsides and you have less pain and bleeding that time.

If your problem persists even after using desensitising paste, then try to send me x-rays, if you can get from your dentist.

Thanks and Regards
