Suggest Treatment For Sensitive Lump Behind Ear

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Nov 2014
Question: 3 days ago right behind my R. ear I noticed a small hard lump behind it and its tender to the touch but otherwise its not sore or hurting or throbbing or anything like that.
There is no head on it such as is found on a pimple and the color of it is the same as the rest of my skin.
Its not in a spot where you would find a lymph node or at least not where I can gather a ear lymph node is located according to charts I have seen on the NET
My health in general is good and I have not had any colds, flu etc.
What could it possibly be?
Its not a bite either.
Thanks in advance.
PS..the lump/bump is where the ear meets my head

Brief Answer:
Reactive Lymph Node

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. The lump behind your right ear is most likely to be a lymph node.

2. Small sub-centimeter size lymph nodes are usually reactive and not considered significant. No active treatment is required. Simple observation is sufficient.

3. Since you have noticed it only three days ago, keep a watch on it. If it remains the same or settles down, there is no need of any investigations.

4. If it increases in size or becomes tender, routine medication should settle this.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any follow up queries, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

Hello Dr.
Thanks for your prompt reply.
So am I to "assume" that it is NOT cancer or anything serious?
Thanks again.

Brief Answer:
Its not cancer or anything serious.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. Yes, its not cancer or anything serious.

2. There are more than three hundred lymph nodes in the head and neck region alone.

3. This is a very unusual site for a cancer to present itself.

4. Simple observation will help you decide the next step.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any follow up queries, I will be available to answer them.
