Posted on Tue, 7 Jul 2015
Question: My kid is 11 months old. He has runny nose and ped prescribed phenergan syrup. We already gave 4 doses (1ml each) over last 24 hours. I just noticed online that this should not be given for kids less than 2 years. I am worried now. Do I need to take any precautions now?

Brief Answer:
Phenergan is contraindicated in child below 2 years

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

In children below 2 years of age there is risk of potentially dangerous respiratory depression with the use of Phenergan and should be avoided. Safer options like levocetirizine can be used in children that are a year old. The ideal next step would be to examine the child for any respiratory depression. If he is breathing normally and at a good rate then you can relax. If there is shallow breathing at a low rate then respiratory support could be advised. To be on the safe side get him checked by your G.P or pediatrician and stop the Phenergan immediately.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
