Suggest Treatment For Rotator Cuff Tear

Posted on Mon, 6 Apr 2015
Question: Hi Doctor. I am 71 years old, had 2 replacement total knee surgeries, the last one being done in Sept. 2014.
Now of all things, I have and MRI showing a Rotaor Cuff Tear. I mentally cannot take any more surgeries and painful recovery. My ortho doc said I could get a cortisone shot and explained even that can cause some discomfort. So my question is 2 fold: I read about something called "smooth and move" for rotator cuff tears and wondered if that is effective; and, I can go into Phys Therapy and would that help? Thank you. Pat

Brief Answer:
Smooth and move will help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The smooth and move technique is successful arthroscopic technique that involves removal of scar tissue and rough edges of tendon and bone and a gentle manipulation is carried out so that a full range of passive motion is achieved. The shoulder can be moved immediately after the surgery. There is no need for protection.
The exercises are then directed at maintaining range of motion and building strength in the muscles and tendons that remain. It is best to go for physical therapy after smooth and move technique. Otherwise for conservative healing immobilization is necessary.
I hope this answers your query.
