Suggest Treatment For Recurring Genital Herpes Outbreaks

Question: I have had issues with a genital wart for nearly two years now. I've had it treated several times and it continues to come back. My girlfriend, whom I met and started dating after growing this horrid wart, has been examined and has shown no signs of warts. She has also had a pap test done and it came back fine.

Now, I've heard many times that the strand of HPV which causes warts is different from the high-risk, potentially cancer-causing strands, but I'm also aware that I could technically possess this kind as well and there are no tests to determine weather or not men have high-risk HPV. If she is clean now, assuming her and I remain together, and she has no sexual partners outside of the relationship, could she ever test positive for high-risk HPV, or is it safe to assume we don't have it? My genital wart is in an area which doesn't really come in contact with her if we're careful so we've had unprotected vaginal and oral sex many times. But I worry that this could someday lead to cervical or oral cancer in her. If I was the only one at risk, I'd be able to handle it, but the thought of my past bouts of sexual immaturity (having sex too frequently and not being careful, as a much younger man) causing her harm is too much guilt for me to handle.

Anyway, I'd appreciate any sort of response Thank you.

Brief Answer:
I respect your love and care for your wife sir

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. As there are no valid and full proof tests available to diagnose HPV in men, I always say to my patients to assume a positive result to help prevent spreading of the infection.

The fact remains here sir that we will never be able to establish a diagnosis in your case until (god forbid) there are more serious repercussions like either the infection is seen in your sexual partner or manifestations of the infection are seen in you (e.g. cancer resulting from the infection, which is also only in certain strains of the infection, which you already know by now).

As you are a young man, and assuming your wife is also a young woman I would encourage your unity and sexual contact. In some cases, warts can just be warts sir and not an infection, but as your wart has not been ruled out as just a wart I would recommend both of you to just get regularly checked medically and nothing else.

I understand and respect your concern sir. The best thing for you to do is to be honest with her about your past and the chance of you having the infection. I am sure she will understand and respect you for being honest. The advantage of this is that she can get regularly checked for the infection to help diagnose it early (if at all it is diagnosed in her, god forbid) which will help to treat it early and avoid any serious complications.

I hope you find my response helpful sir. Please do not hesitate to write to me anymore, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.
