Suggest Treatment For Recurrent Cough And Cold In Toddlers

Question: Good day,
My 2.5yrs old son, weighing 14.5kgs catches cold very often. For cough, doctor prescribed zedex-p. For the past three months, he has been having continuous cough that sounds like barking through out the day. Doctor prescribed sinarest syrup 3ml twice a day. I find that the cough reduces drastically on giving him sinarest but when the medicine loses its effect, it sounds worse than before. Is sinarest only suppressing the cough? Is it the right medicine?
For improving his immunity, doctor prescribed Himalaya septilin. Giving him for the past six months, but it doesn't seem to help. What can be given to develop his immunity?

Brief Answer:
Use Montair Lc kid and Tyxilix syrup.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

I understand your concerns but don't worry. Toddlers are prone to recurrent upper respiratory infections leading to coughs and colds. Most kids out grow it by 3-4 years of age and need only symptomatic treatment. I would not recommend you to use Syp. Septilin any more as its use as immune modifier is doubtful. Also, Zedex P and Sinarest won't help him much.

The best approach of management would by use of antihistamines and leukotriene antagonist such as Syp. Montair LC kid (5 ml once daily 8 pm for 10 days) along with Syp. Tyxilix (2.5 ml thrice daily for 3 days). Ensure a good amount of water intake and healthy balanced diet rich in proteins. Use room humidifier while sleeping if the weather is dry.

Hopefully it will be of help. I would be happy to help you in any further questions.
Take care

1.His doctor had prescribed tyxilix once at night for a good night sleep. Will it cause drowsiness if given during daytime.

2. Can you pls explain how montair lc kid works. I've been giving him different medicines for cough and cold and that concerns me.

Brief Answer:
Do not worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Barking coughs without associated fever or stridor occurs due to laryngitis. This can be due to self limiting viral infection or allergies. The body's reaction to such infection or allergy leads to release of histamines and leukotrienes (inflammatory mediators ) which cause such symptoms.
So, the treatment needs to be against histamines and leukotrienes. Here comes the role of Montair LC kid and Tyxilix. The drugs are suggested in the recommended doses which are harmless and in best interest of child. Mild sedative effect can occur at times but its not harmful. You may discuss this with your treating pediatrician if needed.

Barking cough with no associated stridor, fever and breathlessness is not a serious illness. It's self limiting and improve gradually.
