Question: Hello Doctor,

I have a medical history of recurring boils. I started getting infected about a year back, initially I have been diagnosed for MRSA later blood tests proved it wrong. Doctor prescribed me Topical retapamulin ointment to be applied in nostril area and anal rectum. After applying it for 3 long months the infection subsidized. But again few months back I got one on my shoulder and heat compression and paining like hell it drained after 10 - 12 days. Now I've got a new one on my lower back. I'm too worried that it isn't cured fully. It's very painful and social embarrassment too. Please help me and thanks in advance.

Brief Answer:
get your blood sugar levels done

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Welcome to Healthcaremagic.com.
I have read your query.
I understand your concern.
The most common reason for recurrent boils in any person is Diabetes Mellitus. If you have never got your blood sugar levels done or got it done long back , then I will advise you to get it done.
Sometimes this is the only symptom that a person of Diabetes Mellitus experiences.
Another very common reason for recurrent boils is Carrier state. You already have applied Retapamulin over both nostrils and anal area. Besides nostrils and anal area, I advice my patients to apply topical antibiotic cream over armpits also.
You may require oral antibiotics like combination of ampicillin and Dicloxacillin.
Kindly get back to me with blood sugar report.
Visit your doctor so that he can examine you and order tests for you.
You can share my opinion with him. I hope it helps.
Stay healthy.

Hello Doctor,

Thanks for your response. My blood sugar level is normal. Retapamulin was prescribed to me a year back and I used it for 3 months as doctor suggested, now after a year I'm getting the boils back. One 2 months back and one now.

Brief Answer:
it is most likely Reinfection

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Welcome back.
Its good that your blood sugar levels are normal.
You took 3 months course of Retapamulin 1 year back. Then it indicates Reinfection.
In such scenario, you have to repeat the course . If you wer my patient, I would have advised you to apply topical antibiotic cream like mupirocin 2 percent or Retapamulin over the affected area and both nostrils, armpits and anal area also.
if severe, you need to take broad spectrum oral antibiotics like Ampicillin and Dicloxacillin combination.
But all these medications should be taken under supervision of the doctor only.
I hope this information helps.
Take care.
