Question: my brother has a suprapubic catheter and continue to get UTI's and Bladder infectiptons. How or what can we do to help prevent these problems? Is there some type of medication that can be taken daily to help with this. He has had one since 2012 and continues to be in and out of the hospital with infections 2-3 months or ER often His Urologist changed catheter on Tuesday of last week and he feels as though he has to pee all the time or most of the time. Is there something we can do to help with these infections? We have get faith in his doctor but we know there is ongoing educational material and answers available and he would be glad to receive any info you can provide. The tube is attached to his leg but he complains if we move it at all.

Thanks XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
You need to change catheter every 3-4 months

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for your query, based on the facts that you have posted it appears that your brother has supra-pubic catheter since 2 years .You have not mentioned the reason for putting SPC.

Ideally Supra -Pubic catheter has to be changed every 3-4 months

It is a known fact that one who has SPC always gets repeated infection due to catheter itself due to foreign body reaction to the Latax rubber of the catheter..

Normally it is always advisable to use Silicon Catheter which is comparatively inert and there is less reaction to silicon catheter,

This (Silicon Catheter)can be kept for 6 months but has to be changed every 5-6 months .

Please get his routine urine test and urine culture done to find out the organisms causing this infection and antibiotics to which they are sensitive to.so that infection can be kept under control by taking appropriate antibiotics.

As organisms always change their sensitivity pattern one has to do urine culture very frequently say every two months.

Hope I have answered your query. Please feel free to write if you have more questions I shall be happy to help you .
Thanks and Regards .
