Suggest Treatment For Reactive Hypoglycemia

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Jul 2015
Question: I have been diagnosed with reactive hypoglycemia. My sugar levels only drop after I eat. If I fast, my sugar levels remain totally normal. I just ate and my sugar level is 267. I know with a level this high, the drop and low are going to be quick and extreme. Usually my sugar levels end up in the 30s to 40s and usually fall from the high to the low in about 45 minutes. Anything I can do to prevent the drop?

Brief Answer:
Post prandial hypoglycemia

Detailed Answer:
Good day,
Welcome to health care magic.com.
With a post meal sugar of 267, you seems to have diabetes. What is your latest HbA1c and fasting blood glucose levels?
What is your height, weight and BMI ?
Any family history of diabetes?

Fall in sugars after a heavy carbohydrate meal is due to couple pf reasons.
1) Reactive hypoglycemia
2) Insulin receptor antobodies
3) Due to medicines used for diabetes ( ?? are you on any such medicines?)

You need a mixed meal test to evaluate for hypoglycemia. Bsides, you may also need an insulin receptor antibiidy test.

In the interim, you need diet modifications to prevent these episodes. Please avoid eating simple carbohydrates and eat only complex carbohydrates. You may need to meet a diatcian who is specialized in diabetes to advice you regarding this. Besides, you may have to split your meals and eat in 3-4 hourly intervals in small amounts.
Weight loss, exercise and Metformin will help further.
Have you met an endocrinologist?

Binu
