Suggest Treatment For Rash On Chin Caused After A Dental Procedure

Posted on Tue, 4 Nov 2014
Question: Hi there! I went to the dentist two days ago, and he had to put a crown cap back on my tooth. Well he did that and filled a cavity, and told me he was going to numb the me up for the cavity, which was on the right side. Later on that night the left side of my face swelled up, and lip, and then I proceeded to get a rash on the underneath side of my chin, which itches like heck, but the worst is I have a white stripe on the side of my tongue on the left side which is painful, because it is hitting my teeth, and at the end of my tongue which burns like heck. I am trying not eat or drink because it is painful. I took Benadrill, and it is a little better, but not my much. I am putting 1% cortisone on the rash under my chin, but to no avail. I went to the dentist on Saturday, and I am still having this problem. I do have a sensitivity to latex, but it seems like this happens every time they move my tongue over to get to the tooth. I have never had one this bad in my life. I am lost as to what to do?

Hi Dr. XXXXXXX They found out the I was allergic to latex, when I had the patches put on my chest for an overnight heart monitor. The next day, I was all red and itchy, and could not wait for them to get them off. I had ring imprints, for 3 weeks after that.
Medications I take are Levothyroxine, Phentermine, Losartin, and Escitalopram 20 Miligrams. Two days prior to the dentist, I did not take Losartin, Excitalopram, or phentermine.
Benadryl seems to help, but the left side of my tongue is still swollen, and my lip on the left side is still a little swollen, and the rash or hives are still there. The white area under the left side of the tongue, keeps hitting the sides of my teeth, and the one on the tip of the tongue is burning I am afraid of eating as I don't want to set off anymore pain.
I have allergies to artificial nails, more so to the glues, gels, etc. I do know that whatever he sprays to disinfect my mouth, or to the area he is working, it always seems and tastes metallic, and I taste it a long time afterword.
I also have numerous food allergies, and hay fever allergies as well. I am wondering if I need something orally as well.

Brief Answer:
Biopsy advised

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for reply.

After going through the complete history it appears that there is inflammation in tongue mucosa.Thats why you are getting varied symptoms.

Now, it would be my advise that please see your dentist at the earliest and get the inflammed tissue evaluated clinically. It could be leukoplakia or mere simple apthous too.
your dentist might advise you on biopsy of lesion too,if it takes more than two weeks to heal.Meanwhile please apply dologel ointment before and after food to prevent pain and burning while eating.Donot worry and be stress free.

Also do warm saline rinses and continue with your oral hygiene measures until you see the dentist.Continue with your vitamin supplements especially vitamin B Complex.

If there are any jagged ends of teeth,it should be thoroughly smoothened to avoid any further damage to tongue tissue.
Therefore please meet your dentist once regarding this.

Let me know for further doubts.
Thanks.
Take care.

Thank you very much Dr. XXXXXXX I will follow up with my dentist. It is much better today, as I have been drinking a lot of water, and I will get some Vitamin B complex, and try and reduce stress. I have been under a lot of stress, so I would not be surprised if this was the case.
Once again, thank you so much! I forgot to say also that I drink a lot of coffee and forget to drink water, and my medication makes my mouth very dry. I also have a very high acid mantel, and I am allergic to certain foods, so sometimes I get upper sores on the back by the back teeth. I have gone to the dentist, but no cancer things were present. I have to remember not to have too much acid, and to drink lots of water. The white has completely disappeared. I will get him to file the teeth down though, as I seem to constantly bite my upper lip when chewing.

Thank you once again. Sincerely, XXXXXXX XXXX

Hello and welcome.
Thanks for sharing your concern.

Please note that since you are aware that you get dryness in the mouth, then you must take plenty of fluids.Reduce intake of tea/coffee,but no need to stop them completely.
Eat a very healthy and nutritious diet along with vitamin supplements.Lead as much as possible a stress free life.Following these measures will certainly reduce your tongue inflammation.
You can also use artificial salivary substitutes readily available in market,if required.
